Business Plans
The majority of businesses only bother with a Business Plan when they start looking for a loan. They are often taken aback by a bank’s request to provide a Business Plan and Cashflow. They then create a Business Plan aimed at getting the funding they want. This often bears little relationship to reality and is generally dumped in a drawer and never looked at again once the loan is in place.
Really successful businesses have a plan which they consult regularly and compare what they have actually achieved with what they planned to achieve. Having a plan is a fundamental requirement of a successful business. If you were setting off to sail across the Atlantic you would have a reasonable idea of how you were going to get there. You wouldn’t simply head off in a westerly direction (Columbus did, but he was probably lucky – and he didn’t end up where he wanted to go).
The opening sentence of this page was a bit misleading. Many small business owners have a plan, but it’s in their head and, as they grow, the plan doesn’t actually grow so gets left behind. This is one reason why a lot of businesses seem to lose their way after a few years.
